Zanjeer is directed and produced by Prakash Mehra; as it was transition from romance to action thriller film in Bollywood so it is an amalgamation of romance, musical family drama and action genre. The story is basically about Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) whose parents had been murder when he was young, by some unknown (masked) person riding on a horse with a shackle on his wrist.  Vijay brought up by a policeman and grows up, with a nightmare of white stallion, into an honest police inspector. He wins the heart of owner of a gambling den Sher Khan (Pran) and befriend with him. While maintaining Law and order in his town he saves the life of Mala (Jaya Bhaduri); who is a street performer and eventually falls in love with her. Vijay encounters many battles with underworld (Godfather) Teja (Ajit Khan) and has shown a man of temperamental character who bravely fight with evil. By the end he comes to know about his parent’s murder that turns out to be Teja and kill him. In this film Amitabh Bachchan has performed an angry young man role for the first time.
